I cracked up when I read this, and I even re-read it to make sure I was not hallucinating. I will type the whole paragraph so that you can not think words have been taken out of context:

"The major life events were birth, marrage, adn death. Puberty was no considered particularly significant, although a girl's first menses was meaningful, not because it signaled puberty, but because the girl was entering a different category, that of a menstruating woman. Menstruating women were isolated from the group, both to avoid contamination and to preven some women's accompanying 'mood changes' from disrupting harmony"

-Mark Q. Sutton "An Introduction to Native North America" chapter 12, pg 344

*contamination = it was not good for blood to be outside of the human body, it "crossed the lines" and caused "mixing" of natural substances which was considered impure.

you can draw your own conclusions...

obvious - blink 182 (the song was actually playing, which made me laugh harder)
